BANK OF AFRICA has donated a sum of Shs7m to support the awareness of obstetric fistula in Uganda.

The campaign was started by Women At Work International, who also held a charity walk on Saturday dubbed Fistula Charity walk.

Speaking at the event, BANK OF AFRICA Marketing and Communications Manager, Claire Mugabi retold their dedication as a bank to join efforts in fighting against obstetric Fistula.

Mugabi said that they recognize that more and more cases of fistula are registered every year with over 2000 lives devastated because of the disease.

“At BANK OF AFRICA, we believe that every woman in Uganda deserves a shot at good maternal healthcare and that is why we have joined hands to support this cause,” she added.

This, it should be noted, is noted, is not the first time BANK OF AFRICA is supporting the casue as it has previously contributed up to Ugshs35m to the fistula awareness.

Halima Namakula, the Chief Executive Officer of Women at Work International, also highlighted that Fistula remains a big problem amongst Ugandan youth with a big number of them suffering the condition as a result of early pregnancies.

She mentioned that the focus is now geared towards prevention other than cure.

“Our focus now is on educating the girl child against early pregnancies so that we can reduce the number of fistula cases amongst young girls in Uganda,” she added.

Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, who was the guest of honor, commended BANK OF AFRICA and Women At Work International for their continued support of Fistula awareness.

“It is a pleasure to see the work of sacrifice, endurance and commitment that Mama Halima Namakula and all partners have put into this cause,” she said.

Kadaga also pleaded to support fistula survivors through scholarships.
